Right Whale On The Brink On The Rebound. by Douglas H. Chadwick, National Geographic magazine.

Right whales were almost hunted to extinction for oil starting before the renaissance. They are still in great danger from the fishing industry and and shipping lanes where fishing tackle and cargo ships collide with them. But they do have a growing population at 1 or 2 precent. "Yet some scientist's models say that by saving just tow sexually active females each year would change the trend for this endangered species from either downward or level upward".(P.111) This really surprised me and really made me realize how endangered the right whale is. By saving just two females a year could save the population. There is only about 350 to 400 North Atlantic right whales left, but really makes me sad is that it will probably only get worse as there is a bigger demand for fish and Imports and Exports. Hearing this makes me furious at the whalers that hunted these whales for their oil.

I am currently reading the book the book Kite Runner and it is a book set in Afghanistan just before the Taliban and after. This has to be one of the saddest books I have ever read, but the thing that struck me the most is the main protagonists description of Afghanistan before the soviet invasion. He describes it as a beautiful place with many plants and plenty of water. It is a stark contrast to near the end of the book where Afghanistan is a dead desert where all the trees were cut down. I really facinates me to see what Afghanistan was before the soviets and Taliban.
