Q2 outside reading post #3
I am currently reading Marley & Me by John Grogan, its the story of a young couple that decides to get a dog and choose a friendly, energetic puppy. When deciding to name the puppy the decide to name it after the singer Bob Marley, the young couple quickly realizes that the dog Marley is almost more than they can handle. The dog destroys almost everything and loves to misbehave. Marley loves to bite and jump on things but he is a nice loving dog that hates to be left alone for more than a minute. Through the parts of the book so far Marley serves as a calming steady friend. He helps the wife of the person writing this book to feel more comfortable about having a baby, convincing her that she is ready to care for it. Marley also is the constant friend always there for some of the harder moments in their lives. He is with them when their first pregnancy fails and calms the narrator down when their neighbor is attacked by a man with a knife. Marley represents the constant friend that is always their for you and is never faltering. If this book was rewritten and Marleys character was replaced with a human, the story and the connection would not be there. A human would be unfaithful and bitter at some times, to make them as lovable and as caring as Marley would come off as fake and unrealistic. Yet with a dog it is totally believable. Anyone who has had a dog knows what I mean, the dog can destroy the furniture and make your life a pain yet you still love your dog. I am excited to finish Marley & Me, but I think I can predict the ending all to well. Your dog might be your best friend you have ever known but their life span is all to short. I am certain that Marley will die at the end of the book.
